My dad ran a military hospital in Thailand in the last years of the Vietnam war. We had to move off-base while he was gone.
it was Fairfield, CA - one of those towns carved out of the agricultural heart of the state: swimming pools and souless tract houses.
Mom and Dad were smart, fresh-faced mid-westerners who had escaped small town Missouri for the California Dream
My dad was in his late twenties and my mom was a medical tech who hadn’t found her second career. Our family friends were all pilots.
in a post-Apollo anniversary mood, I’m digging into Andrew Smith’s Moondust for an outside of America view.
During that period, we lived on Travis Air Force base in CA, my mom with two tiny children and my dad about to head over to Vietnam.
My memories don’t extend that far back but the Air Force culture and childhood photographs loom large in my perception of that time.
We lived near dozens of other kids, on a suburban cul de sac. Epic games of kick-the-can and red rover. 4th of July cliches.
70s California hadn’t arrived for us yet. That was when we moved down to the east bay. It was still the 60s for mom and dad, I think.

I used to hate Ryan Adams because I thought he was the Evan Dando of 00’s. I was very wrong and now i’m rediscovering his discs.
The Low Anthem’s “Oh My God, Charlie Darwin” is rocking my world this Sunday morning. Bluesy Americana, with a bit of Tom Waits on the side
